BDP appointed to Elland Road West Stand redevelopment project

Architects BDP to play key role in project to increase capacity at Leeds United’s ground from 37,645 to 53,000.

Leeds United Football Club has appointed BDP Pattern, the sports and entertainment division of BDP, to deliver the redevelopment of the West Stand at Elland Road Stadium.

The project is a pivotal step in the club’s ambitious vision to reimagine and expand its historic ground and the appointment covers RIBA Stages 4–6 of the redevelopment of the West Stand, with BDP Pattern overseeing detailed development, technical design and delivery through to completion. The West Stand upgrade is a cornerstone of the wider masterplan to increase capacity from 37,645 to 53,000, while protecting Elland Road’s unique identity and matchday atmosphere.

The redevelopment will transform the fan experience with improved accessibility, world-class hospitality and modernised facilities, ensuring Elland Road continues to stand as one of football’s most atmospheric stadiums. Alongside the West Stand, the North Stand will also be elevated to meet modern standards, with the South Stand earmarked for future enhancements.

BDP Pattern’s appointment builds on its acclaimed work at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson stadium, where the practice has been praised for combining cutting-edge design with an unrivalled fan experience, delivering the project on time and on budget. Its proven ability to deliver complex stadium projects in live environments will be central to the success of Elland Road’s transformation.

Luke Harrison, architect director at BDP, said: “Elland Road is the beating heart of Leeds United and of the city itself. I spent seven years studying in the city and my dad is a lifelong Leeds United fan, so I know first-hand what this club means to its supporters and to the wider community. That makes the responsibility of creating a true legacy here even more meaningful.

“With our Leeds studio already shaping major developments across the city, we’re bringing that local insight directly into this project. Our goal is simple: to design a stadium that honours the club’s history, celebrates its story and delivers a ground that matches Leeds United’s ambition for the future.”
